Franz Xaver Hammer (1741-1817) was one of the last masters of the viola da gamba. He worked for a time at court of Prince Esterhazy under Haydn. The accompaniment can be played on fortepiano or harpsichord, with or without the addition of another bass instrument, whether cello or another viol.
