Alexander (Alessandro) Orologio was born in Italy between 1550 and 1560, but he seems to have spent his working life in German-speaking territory.
Orologio was probably the first composer to publish intradas of the type that was extensively cultivated by German musicians over the next couple of decades: among those who contributed to this form were Demantius,Franck, Schultzeand Haussmann. Orologios intradas are somewhat less ambitious than those of some of these others. They are generally rather solemn pieces, not unlike stylised pavanes except for two important differences: they tend to make more use of cross-rhythms and lively rhythmic writing generally, and with their frequent use of repeated notes and narrow ranges they are especially suitable for wind instruments. Thanks to Denis Carpenter for the sound sample. This works for a group of six cornettos as well.
